OpenX Spits Out "$creative_html" Instead of An Ads

Recently I noticed that my site was showing some kind of error in place where OpenX was supposed to serve ads. As I had no time to troubleshoot, it was left that way for quite sometime.

This is what was shown in the OpenX ad zone, a phrase that says “$creative_html”. Hey, what does that mean?

I did some searches on the web and OpenX forum but there’s not much info than could help me with this problem.

I actually have several ads linked to this zone so the very first step was to remove all of them and added them back one by one. Each time I reloaded the webpage to see if anything happened.

First few ads were added and there was no problem to be seen i.e. the ads loaded and rotated as normal. The ads showed up such as the example below.

However when I linked “OpenX Market Advertiser - Default Campaign” to the zone and refreshed the browser, I got the “error” again. Removed it and it’s gone. Did this few times and it’s very consistent that the culprit was the OpenX ads.

Now I know why it was not working but still can’t tell what’s really wrong. OpenX Market ads will have to stay out of my site until someone fixed this error.

Are you seeing this too? Please share.

I just installed openx and added some zones, but.. one of them showed the $CREATIVE_HTML instead. Disabling the openx market for the campaign doesn't seem to help for me.

Hello! The same thing happened to me. I run a server which puts ads on abou 25 websites. Suddenly instead of banners I get $CREATIVE_HTML. I have read on OpenX forum that this error appears when that zone serves remnant campaigns and it is working with all other campaign types. Maybe it worths to try to modify the campaign types to Contract and to see if it is working. As I have no time to do this my solution was to disable the OpenX Market Advertiser from all the zones out there

"... a blank ad: [CHECKED] Serve ads from OpenX Market" i have 3 zones on one website, one is a skyscraper serving my own ads, an 2 button-zones, which should serve openx market ads... in my opinion that's a general bug!

Yup, I'm having the same problem on my Blog (http://blog.snyke.net) too, and it really is annoying, my quick fix for now is to have a Google AdSense fallback with higher priority than the OpenX Market Ads. It's sad, since the main reason I tried OpenX to see how the Market works :-)

I have been using OpenX for awhile to serve custom ads for local businesses, with no problems. Just added OpenX Market to one of our zones yesterday to try it out, and I'm getting the same thing. Sometimes it fills the space with a proper ad, but I've seen a lot of these "$CREATIVE_HTML" errors. I'm mystified. Will have to bail on OpenX Market soon if it keeps doing this--it looks pretty low-rent. Cheers, Lissa Harris http://www.watershedpost.com
